"Annie Gota Gun," a beautiful registered Paint horse, came to us in 2013 with what could of been a devastating corneal ulcer. Despite aggressive topical and oral medications, the injury refused to heal to a point that was stable. Faced with the possiblity that she may lose the eye if the ulcer continued to erode further, Annie's owners, along Dr. Jurk made the decision to perform a conjunctival pedicle flap surgery. This procedure is fairly common place in small animals (dogs and cats), but a bit more complicated when performed on a 3 month old horse. The procedure involves creating a flap out of the white tissue, or conjuntive, that surrounds the eye and suturing the tip of that flap over the defect in the cornea. This provides almost immediate stabilization to the cornea and provides vital blood supply to the wound, which helps expedite healing. The morning of surgery, Annie was lead into our then brand new building, hoofs wrapped to provide better traction, and Dr. Jurk and team set out to save her eye and her vision. Today, Annie is a very succesful mare, competing around the country in both reining and ranch riding competitions!
- I also can’t say enough about every single member of her staff! They are absolutely phenomenal! We are always made to feel welcome and like a member of the family. I couldn’t recommend Animal Eye Care more!
